The Origins of Enochic Judaism
Florence, 19-23 June 2001
Palazzo Corsi-Salviati
- Chair: Gabriele Boccaccini, University of Michigan, USA
The Enoch Seminar took shape in the year 2000 at the initiative of a group of international scholars, who answered Gabriele Boccaccini’s call for a meeting of American, European and Israeli specialists on Second Temple Judaism and Christian Origins. The founding group included James Charlesworth, John Collins, Michael Daise, Yaron Eliav, Martha Himmelfarb, George Nickelsburg, Pierluigi Piovanelli, David Suter, Benjamin Wright, and Adela Yarbro Collins, from America; Andreas Bedenbender, Claudio Gianotto, Florentino García Martínez, Klaus Koch, Michael Knibb, Helge Kvanvig, Paolo Sacchi, Loren Stuckenbruck, and Eibert Tigchelaar, from Europe; Devorah Dimant, Hanan Eshel, Esther Eshel, and Ithamar Gruenwald, from Israel.
23 papers circulated in advance and were discussed at the conference in plenary sessions. In attendance were 35 scholars, from 8 countries (Canada, Germany, Italy, Israel, the Netherlands, Norway, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America).
The Proceedings were published in 2002 by Zamorani in a special issue of the journal Henoch [The Origins of Enochic Judaism, ed. Gabriele Boccaccini, Henoch 24.1-2, 2002].
In 2007 a group of participants revisited the material and produced a second publication by Brill [The Early Enoch Literature, ed. Gabriele Boccaccini and John Collins].
