It is with great sorrow that we announce that our dear friend and colleague Michael Bonner has passed away. The news came completely unexpected.
Michael had joined with great enthusiasm our seminars in early Islamic Studies, becoming one of the leading voices in the group. We were expecting him in Italy in a few weeks to present a paper at the Eleventh Nangeroni Meeting in Milan.
Michael was a distinguished scholar in Islamic Studies at the University of Michigan, a gifted musician, and an exceptional human being, full of life and wit. He was very well known internationally as the author of Jihad in Islamic History: Doctrines and Practice, as well as many other important publications on early Islam. His death is a great loss for his family and friends, as well as for the Enoch Seminar and the Dept. of Middle East Studies at the University of Michigan. Our thoughts are with his wife Daniela.
We will all miss you terribly, Michael. May your memory be for a blessing.
